Shri Anil Swarup holds a Masters degree in Political Science from Allahabad University, where he was awarded the Chancellor's Gold medal for the best all-round student. He is presently posted as Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India. Before this assignment, in his capacity as Secretary, Ministry of Coal, he was instrumental in carrying out the auction of coal blocks that is likely to result in a revenue flow of around Rs. 3 Lakh Crore to the States.

Shri Anil Swarup started his career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in, 1981. His past assignments in various Ministries of the Government reflect his in-depth knowledge and experience in visualising, conceptualising, articulating and implementing various schemes.

At the very beginning of his administrative career, he was awarded the Best officer Award at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration amongst the officers of 1981 batch.
